Cwm Gwaun

Cwm Gwaun, the Gwaun valley, is rich in archaeology and history, with evidence that humans lived here for thousands of years. Among its finest features are early medieval stone crosses, associated with churches and their graveyards. Predating current churches, these stones serve as a reminder of Christian worship in the valley many centuries ago.

Dating back between 1,400-900 years, these early medieval stones typically feature very detailed carved crosses, though their designs can be quite different. Notable examples can be found at St Brynach’s church in Pontfaen, where two stones are present within the graveyard, each with a cross.

Llanllawer Church, located above Llanychaer, is another significant site, boasting two early medieval stones located within its walls, along with two more featuring carved crosses at the entrance to the graveyard. Among the most decorated finds from the region is a stone from Llanychaer church. This extraordinary piece has a carving of Christ crucified and variations of crosses on all its sides.
